When you find a mess, do you need the backstory? Do you share the story?
Do you hunt it down with questions? Why? Who did it?
I just looked at the blog. I had been in a habit of marking my knitting year with the start of a summer.
Got away from me this summer. I don't think there's an interesting story in any of that.
Cleaning up:
1 Pair Socks
Sunrise Blender Sock
1 Pair Gloves
Gorky Rustic Gloves
1 Garment
Baby Kimono - finished and gifted, though knit forever ago
4 Scarves/Shawls
Dragon Lady Pogona Scarf
British Breakfront: a Frangiflutti scarf
Silver Square Scarf for nephew
A Sorta-Sontag (T.Y. Godey)
12 Hats
Linen Hat
2 Hats for Minneapolis Swatch Team 2011
Grey Bulky Hat
Entrelac hat
Urchin hat
Many Manly Hats, 6 actually
That cleans up the list on the side. It also leaves it pretty empty.
I did a lot of sewing this summer instead, even if it was quick stuff.
I'm not going to bother to add in all the links. If you stop by the blog often, you saw it and it's old news. Nothing very illuminating last year.
The knitting was functional, and it did what I needed it to do, product and process.

A Paltry Summer to Summer Count and other lists
What am I thinking?
Not only is this post late, the summer to summer tally is short, short, short. From Memorial Day to Memorial Day was the initial intent. An appropriate textile year - not calendar nor fiscal - June lets me start fresh. It's almost the end of June. You'd think I'd forgotten.
What did I knit?
This year was BUSY. The knitting was not so great. I completed knitting a grand total of:
Three Whole Scarves
One Cowl
One Pair of Socks
What, no more knitting?
Au contraire. True, much of the knitting in progress this year has drifted in and out of actual progress:
1. There was a variant of an 1860's "bosom friend" shawl destined for costume use. Sewing took priority, and so that is languishing.
2. There's some progress on the cotton blanket.
3. I stalled on a pair of gloves for my nephew, who will likely not be wanting them for cross country in fall. Stalled for questions of size, the glove has now had a fitting and should be fit to return to active knitting.
4. After a false start of a third of a foot, one of the socks from the wonderfully named Frogs in a Blender colorway is actually done, and the next is underway.
5. Knitting a Stephen West scarf for myself. I am doing the dance of no leftovers, hoping that I will gauge the knitting correctly so I have the perfect amount of yarn left for the finishing.
What DID I do?
A. A year long project involving Civil War era costumes. I have increased my lifetime count of making men's tailored jackets from two to well over a dozen.
B. Tenure and promotion.
C. Directed two shows.
D. Put on unnecessary weight. (See A, B, C, B, and B.)
E. Lowered my blood pressure and cholesterol, despite D.
What am I doing now?
Excellent question. That's for another post. Some evidence in the previous post.

Way, way, way behind on my summer to summer tally
I post late, but the count is valid. Memorial Day to Memorial Day, pics linked as available:
Hats, 9 of them
Socks, one pair
Cardigan,one
Mittens, 2 pair
Neckwarmers, one and an ambiguous scarf/neckwarmer
Two shawls, if small
Scarves, 6 of them for gifts
And of course:
Dishcloths, 2
Kept one hat and the scarf/neckwarmer, as the yarn was a gift.
All the rest were gifts and, as such, moved on.
This is not bad.
In fact, this being the case, I'd almost wish the list were longer.

How'd this happen?
I have very little on the needles.
I'm making Anna Bell's Old Shale Baby Blanket for a gift. This is an active project.
I've moved the Malabrigo Buenos Aires pattern cardigan into gift land - my mother requested a sweater, first time ever, and this was exactly what she was describing. She's even seen the sweater in progress and approves of the colors for her wardrobe.
I need to revisit the condition of this UFO and see what I need to do next. It could move into active project land soon. We're not holding our breath for completion here. Fall could be fine.
I've two other UFO sweaters in what Elizabeth of Sable calls hibernation.
I've wound up yarn for a pair of socks for an aunt I have two aunts on the sock list now, which is fun. Really. I'm not under pressure. One is always cold, and the other lives way the heck up north, where weather is almost always cold.
Seriously, though, the last 12 items I made were gifts.
How'd that happen? TWELVE.
I'm due for a knit for myself.
Trouble is, I can't think what it should be.
Swatched instead of knitting the blanket last night.
Moved some yarn around, since I needed to find the small computer bag I had in a bin behind the yarn bins. This because I bought myself a very small computer.
Seriously. First computer purchase EVER.

To Do List Tidying
Great LONG weekend:
Finished up the afghan my grandmother had been making for my youngest aunt and her husband. (My mother had passed along the project for me to do after my grandmother passed away.)
Finished up a pair of socks.

Tended to several pieces of mending (buttons, pocket linings, split seams).
Finished up a skirt.
Got the landlord to organize fixing a bunch of minor plumbing concerns (done Thursday and Monday).
Took the car in for its emissions test.
Made a batch of chili from beans already cooked but hanging out in the freezer.
Made a vet appointment for Friday.
Cleaned things.
Had the first meeting for a costume project.
Oh, and I relaxed, recreated, socialized, and enjoyed some tasty treats.
More later. I have a productive morning ahead of me, but it's not at the computer.

Summer is here!
I started this habit a few years ago. Rather than leave all the tallies to the change in calendar year, I decided a Summer to Summer Knitting Count was better suited for me. I like the fresh start of a summer, and I like to believe that I have a bit more personal time during the summer.
This year of knitting had a lot of smaller projects and a fair bit of gift knitting:
3 pairs of socks
* Petrified Wood socks
* Elfine
* Yarrow Ribbed Trekking sock
6 hats
* Foliage
* Le Slouch, 2
* Twisted Rib chemo cap
* other hats, 2
8 scarf and scarf-like objects
* Cowls , 2
* Easter Swatch
* striped 1 x 1 ribbed scarf, of the ubiquitous Noro variety, 2
* a ribbed scarf
* Spanish Dancer
* Tuscany with Pastimes soysilk
* Cozy
* Argosy Wrap
2 garments
* Alpaca Drops 103-1 cardigan
* Niece shrug
3 bags
* Everlasting Bagstopper
* messenger bags, 2
Other things
* Fetching mitts
* dishcloths, 6
I usually post this sooner, but hey - I've been having some of that not-to-be-dismissed personal time.

Ravelry Double Dare
I have taken on a Ravelry double-dare. Mission Possible and Stash Down 2008.
Flashing Stash at Knitty was fun. Entering it on Ravelry was illuminating. Shocking. Revealing. Humbling. Embarrassing.
Has been, that is, not just was. I'm not quite done.
Decided that I rather liked the notion of tackling my own personal 12 missions for 12 months (or forfeit the yarn). Socks, I said. I have more yarn than fits into the sock boxes. And there used to be one sock yarn box. I liked even the progress of counting socks (witness the outdated challenge button I still keep updating), but last year I seemed to have fallen short. Upwards and onwards, I say!
Having taken some time to document sock stash more candidly, and having taken a severe look at the whole, I have outlined my list of 12 pairs of socks I MUST KNIT. Options for forfeit are to discard the unfinished item, have a bonfire, give it to a friend, etc. I decided that the penalty needed to be more generous donation than ritual discard. I hesitate to make my semi-finished project someone else's problem, so I landed here: I’ll have to give away the comparable yarn - especially since I do have some multiples. (Some. Sheesh. I should be smacked.)
Here's the list of monthly challenges.
1. January - a pair of second socks Have finished one (Yarrow Rib) and am past the heel on the second (Elfine)
2. Feb. - STR Petrified
3. Mar. - CTH Green Mtn. whatever
4. April - Trekking pastel
5. May - Red Jawoll
6. June - LL Jeans
7. July - Solid CTH
8. Aug. - Knitter’s Choice (can’t decide EVERYTHING now)
9. Sept. - Claudia Handpaint (any color)
10. Oct. - KPPM (any color)
11. Nov. - Bearfoot (any color)
12. Dec. - Mountain Feat (Really, it’s spelled that way.)
I’ll decide patterns as I sort out gauge. That’s the list. Sticking to it.
This mission coincides with the Stash Down. All the above have been in the stash long enough to be in the QUIT IGNORING ME category. Not to mention that most have been acquired because of some lovely gifting or some sale venture or out-of-town yarnsex. Stash Down goals will always include the Mission socks. Beyond that, I can add up my own monthly goals AND look to the group for some of their ongoing ideas. (I'm still not much of a chatterer at Ravelry. Knitty's got that spot in my heart, for all that I'm not exactly Chatty Kathy there, either.) Stash Down goals for (where was I?) for January were largely finishing. No penalty box here. I've packaged up the niece and nephew goodies, and I'll get that Tuscany blocked by Friday (as there are other things happening on the cutting tables at the moment). But mercy me! There's some work to be done.
I need to knit up and stitch up at a rate higher than my acquisition habits have been going. I'll have more to say on that another day. There are stories to tell, some habits to face up to. Today there are a few other things to do, not to mention this perfectly lovely sock I'm within days of finishing - and within days of a deadline FOR finishing. Three and half 16 row repeats and then some cuff.....sounds like a dare I can safely double and even double dog dare myself to finish.

Counting, as of May 2007
Last May I posted a Summer to Summer tally of the knitting I'd done that year. It's surprisingly full of small projects. Must have been due to the increase in commuting via public transportation. (Good reminder. It's summer. Need to increase that habit again.)
I've been running the list in the sidebar, and it's time for a little housekeeping.
May 2007:
GARMENTS:
Steel Penny sweater
HBCute Kimono (okay, I have to finish a seam, but it's done, really.)
HEADWEAR:
hats, 7
calorimetry
black purl baby hat & matching booties
FOOTWEAR:
another pair of booties
Hedera socks
Fuzzy Feet, 4 pr
Aunt socks
Lorna socks, 2
Bearfoot Rib & Cable sock - first sock done but too small. Must redo.
VARIOUS:
gift scarves, 2
Kitty Pi, 2.5 (lost a half-finished one)
fingerless mitts, 2 pr
washcloths, 5

Counting
Seems to me that the last two years I launched into some serious knitting in May, just about at graduation. I hauled a significant project into graduation rehearsal each year. I get a fair bit of knitting time in before I have responsibilities which take enough time for OTHER PEOPLE to get a fair bit of knitting in.
Seems to me that last May I took a count of what I'd finished from one May to the next. Beats me where I recorded that. It's not on the blog.
However. Seems to me it's just about time for another count.
Last May I was knitting Cambio at graduation. Sidetracked. Should finish this summer.
Beyond that:
2 sweaters, start to finish
Finished up Bach 111 socks
6 additional pairs of socks, start to finish
1 niece poncho
2 hats
3 scarves just for me
one dishcloth (while I was on the late spring cotton path)
oh yes, t-shirt "chainmail"
and a single stuffed glove.
That's EVERYTHING.
Can't wait to see what the next year will produce!
(ETA: I found the list in the knitting journal. Took out two dishclothes and the string bag from this list, as evidently I'd finished them before the great memorial day count last year. My sock count may be suspect, too. Not quite sure.)
