You have to get those things for clipping kids mittens to their sleeves, but use them for clipping your hat to your coat. Or maybe you could repurpose a retracting key holder and attach that somewere in your coat. That wouldn't get tangled in your hair as easily. If you started wearing winterized very large brimmed Kentucky Derby type hats, those would be less easy to forget or have stolen.
